Volunteers Make a Difference for Patients and Their Families

University of Iowa Health Care recognizes the 1,527 volunteers who donated 115,214 hours of time and energy to the hospitals and clinics in the past fiscal year. National Volunteer Week, April 21 to 27, honors the selfless dedication and hard work of our volunteers.

Without a doubt, our volunteers have a positive impact on the experiences of the thousands of patients, families, visitors, faculty, and staff who pass through our doors each day. They are frequently credited for going the extra mile and giving the extra inch to offer comfort and support - whether assisting patients, serving customers through Volunteer Services’ businesses, or providing amenities throughout the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

"Our volunteers bring to life our shared purpose of caring with our minds, hands, and hearts," offers Jean Robillard, MD, University of Iowa Vice President for Medical Affairs.

UI Health Care volunteers are a varied and diverse group. They include students, retirees, and employees.

One such volunteer is Emily Strattan, a sophomore at the University of Iowa majoring in health promotion. This is Emily’s first year as a volunteer at UI Hospitals and Clinics, and she is very enthusiastic about what she does.

"I volunteer on one of the units at UI Hospitals and Clinics. There are a number of things I do as a volunteer. I inventory medical supplies, run errands, and answer phones, but what I enjoy most is visiting with patients and attending to their needs," Strattan says. "I love being able to help others, and knowing that my work really makes a difference is an unbelievable feeling."

When you see a volunteer this week, please take a moment to say "thanks" for all they do for our patients and their families. You can also show your appreciation for our wonderful volunteers this week by picking up and wearing an "I Heart Volunteers" sticker from any of the Volunteer Services-sponsored businesses or partners.

In our Words of Thanks video, patients, staff, and administrators of UI Hospitals and Clinics share their appreciation for our volunteers, by demonstrating how three seemingly insignificant words by themselves can mean so much when put together.
