Hello, It's Us!

Hello, It’s Us! is produced in Iowa City by the Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD), and is co-hosted by CDD staff member Mike Hoenig and long-term disability advocate Keith Ruff. The co-hosts, who both have significant disabilities, use public access television to highlight a variety of disability issues, including legislation and policy. Hello, It’s Us! examines the advantages of inclusion from many different perspectives.

 

2016 Programs

  • Episode 1: A Tribute to Terry Cunningham - Guests remember the late Terry Cunningham, long-time “Hello, It's Us!” co-host.
  • Episode 2: Accessibility in the Legislature - Johnson County legislators discuss their priorities for the 2016 Iowa General Assembly.
  • Episode 3: Universal Accessibility on Campus - University of Iowa (UI) Facilities Management Coordinator, Brian Manternach, explores the concept of universal design and updates viewers on accessibility improvements around the UI campus. 
  • Episode 4: Federal Employment Protections - U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Program Manager, Maria Flores, outlines the EEOC's mission and the services it provides. Flores then describes various forms of employment discrimination and remedies for individuals who feel victimized.
  • Episode 5: Restaurant Accessibility - Mike Hoenig and Keith Ruff discuss the importance of having restaurants accessible for people with disabilities at Uptown Bill's Coffee Shop. Special guests include representatives from: Bread Garden, Uptown Bill's Coffee Shop and The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
  • Episode 6: Money Follows the Person (Part 1) - Join Mike Hoenig and Keith Ruff as they welcome Dorothy Spratt-MFP Participant, Jennifer Dundon- MFP Participant, Joe Mara - MFP Participant, Jonnie Cagley- MFP Transition Specialist, Julie Adams - MFP Transition Specialist, SueAnn Morrow - MFP Employment Service Specialist to speak about Money Follows the Person from all aspects of life.

  • Episode 8: A Tribute to Bill Sackter (Part 1) - Join Mike Hoenig and Keith Ruff as they invite Uptown Bill's manager Tom Gilsenan to pay tribute to Bill Sackter, a gentleman whose life became the subject of the internationally-acclaimed film, "Bill."  Gilsenan retraces Bill's journey from resident of a state institution in Minnesota to owner of Wild Bill's Coffee Shop in Iowa City.

  • Episode 12: Disability Rights Advocates (Part 1) - Keith Ruff and Mike Hoenig welcome Cherie Clark, a disability rights advocate. Cherie discusses being a disability advocate in the state of Iowa and being a person with a disability.
  • Episode 13: Disability Rights Advocates (Part 2) - Cathy Hafsi joins Keith Ruff, Mike Hoenig and Cherie Clark to continue our conversation about being a disability rights advocate in the state of Iowa. Cathy shares her personal story about what she has experienced throughout her life, living as a person with a disability.
  • Episode 14: ADA Celebration - Mike Hoenig and Keith Ruff welcome Dave Leshtz and Joy Beadleston as they discuss this year's 26th anniversary celebration of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
