In celebration of Stroke Month this May, the UI Women’s Health Center is partnering with the UI Comprehensive Stroke Center to raise awareness around this often undetected cardiovascular disease through this month’s Spirit Seminar – Don’t Have a Stroke. Classes fill up fast, register today!
Atrial fibrillation (A Fib), a cardiovascular disorder affecting 2.2 million people in the United States, creates a disorganized electrical signal that causes a disturbance in the upper and lower chambers of the heart, preventing them from working together. A-Fib can damage the heart’s electrical system, leading to increased risk for stroke, heart attack or heart failure.
The Stroke Center tests promising medical or surgical therapies to prevent or treat stroke, and our physicians have helped develop important clinical instruments that are used around the world, earning Comprehensive Stroke Center status, the highest level of stroke care certification. This status identifies hospitals that meet standards for treating the most complex stroke cases.
