Burn Care

As the only verified level 1 burn center in Iowa, the UI Burn Treatment Center serves as a Midwest referral site for the care of children and adults facing a host of burn and trauma-related injuries. These acutely ill patients may be facing electrical, chemical, thermal, scalding, frostbite or inhalation injuries, as well as acute or chronic wound infections.

The center treats more than 800 burn and trauma patients each year and annually admits about 260 patients with major burns and 100 patients with major soft tissue infections. Most of Iowa’s patients with extensive burns are sent here for care.

Burn care is a coordinated team effort that includes physicians, nurses, care coordinators, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, dieticians, chaplains, psychiatrists, psychologists, pharmacists, patient representatives and child life therapists for our pediatric patients.

Our pediatric burn treatment care is offered in the state's only comprehensive center burn treatment. Child life specialists are a part of the care team, helping young patients and their families cope with and overcome the ordeals of burn recovery.
