Pre-employment Screening for Healthcare Personnel
Before beginning employment at UI Hospitals and Clinics, every resident/fellow is required to complete a health screening in the University Employee Health Clinic (UEHC). The free health screening is provided for your protection as well as the protection of our patients.
To begin the health screening process, call the Registration Desk at 319-356-3511 to get a medical record number (MRN) assigned to you. Once you have been assigned a MRN, call UEHC to schedule your health screening appointment.
Because you must return to UEHC within 48-72 hours after each tuberculin skin test (TST) is applied, health screenings may not be scheduled on Thursdays. If you know you will have a reaction to the TST, a different method of TB screening will be used.
These documents are required condition of your training and employment at UI Hospitals and Clinics. Failure to provide this information could result in a revocation of employment and/or dismissal.
||One vaccination date after 1970
||Two vaccinations dates after 1968
||Two vaccinations dates after first birthday

Note: Documentation of serological tests indicating immunity to these diseases may be substituted for the vaccination. To find your records, contact your family physician, college student health service or other hospitals/institutions that vaccinated/tested you.
Provide results of one TST completed within the 12 month time period before your start date at UIHC. A second TST must be completed at UEHC before your patient care duties can begin.
A history of a BCG vaccination does not defer the required TB screening.
If you have had a significantly positive tuberculin skin test in the past:
- Please obtain documentation of that test result and any therapy prescribed for your infection.
- If you have had a chest x-ray, bring a copy of the report. Do not send the films.
Interfereon gamma release assay (IGRA) results (e.g. QuantiFERON TB Gold QFT-G or T-spot) will be accepted.
If you have completed the vaccination series, obtain documentation of your vaccination date or Hepatitis B titer documentation (HBsAb or anti-HBs).
Note: The Hepatitis B vaccination series is highly recommended and the UIHC is required to document your acceptance or declination of this immunization.
Respirator Fitness Testing
Respirator fit testing to an N-95 respirator will be performed as part of your health screening visit. Consequently, the approximate time to complete the initial screening evaluation in UEHC should be less than one hour.
