Our hematologists (physicians who treat blood disorders) treat patients who have a variety of malignant and nonmalignant disorders.

UI Hospitals and Clinics specialists provide the most complete blood disorder services in Iowa. Physicians from across the Midwest refer patients to the University of Iowa for bone marrow transplant, hemophilia, leukemia and other conditions of the blood.

  • AABB: This international blood bank association, formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks, granted full accreditation to the hospital's DeGowin Blood Center (2007).
  • Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy: The non-profit corporation founded by the International Society for Cellular Therapy and the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation has granted three-year accreditation to the DeGowin Blood Center's tissues and cellular therapies service (2010).
  • National Marrow Donor Program: The national non-profit organization has annually accredited the DeGowin Blood Center since 2000; the Adult and Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Programs since 1987; the Iowa Marrow Donor Program since 1990, and UI Hospitals and Clinics as a collection center since 1990.
  • First hospital in Iowa, and one of the first nationwide, to use bar coding for all phases of the blood transfusion process (2000-present).
  • First hospital in U.S. to have NIH-funded center for research on anemia in newborn babies (1990-1999).
  • In 1938 UI established first blood bank west of the Mississippi River.
  • Over 32,000 units of blood and blood products transfused in an average year.
