UI Health Care is dedicated to the professional and educational development of our staff, and staff may be eligible to participate in our tuition reimbursement program.
The UI Health Care Tuition Reimbursement Programs are available to eligible Professional and Scientific (including nursing staff), Merit Exempt and Merit Confidential staff members who are paid by UI Health Care, in a 50 percent time (or greater) budgeted position.
The semester application opening dates are as follows:
- Summer - early April
- Fall - early June
- Spring - early November
The semester deadlines are the second Friday in May for Summer, July for Fall, and December for Spring.
What does it cover?
The program covers UI on-campus courses, correspondence courses, special certification exams, as well as other courses taught at accredited colleges/universities. Reimbursement under this program is based on the current value of three semester hours at the University of Iowa (undergraduate or graduate) per semester based on the Liberal Arts Department fee schedule.
Tuition assistance can be applied toward a relevant graduate or undergraduate degree, appropriate certification or specialized training that is relevant to the staff member's UI Health Care position, the needs of the employing department, and/or assists the Hospital in carrying out one of its service missions. The UI Health Care Tuition Reimbursement program does not cover General Education Requirement courses.
University of Iowa Learning and Development
The University of Iowa Learning and Development Office offers professional development and tuition assistance programs for professional development to staff and faculty through coursework and special events, award and tuition assistance programs, management and workplace effectiveness training, resource center for audio cassettes, videos and books on professional development topics, software application videos, CD-ROM programs, and UI orientation.

- Tuition Assistance Program - Open only to UI Health Care Merit contract staff and non-UI Health Care staff members, 50 percent time or greater
- Mary Jo Small Staff Fellowship Award - Open to all P&S and Merit staff members, 50 percent time or greater
- Professional Development Awards - Open to all staff members, 50 percent time or greater
If awarded tuition assistance for UI coursework, the amount will be credited directly to the staff member's U-bill. Please be aware that the tuition assistance credit may not appear on the U-bill before the first tuition due date of a semester. Employees with U-bill payroll deduction may want to consider rescinding that option as the tuition assistance credit may not appear on the U-bill before the first tuition payment is due. To do so, please contact the University Billing Office at 335-0070.
If awarded tuition assistance for an external course or certification, the staff member will initially pay for external course/certification registration. After successful completion of the external coursework/certification, employees must submit a Reimbursement Request Form and the required documentation listed on the form in order to receive reimbursement. All reimbursement information must be submitted within eight months of the date of the award notification or reimbursement may be denied.
After all appropriate documents have been received, a check will be sent in approximately three weeks. If direct deposit has been set up with the University Billing Office, reimbursement will occur in approximately two business days.
Direct deposit may be set up online in ISIS:
- Log into ISIS using your HawkID and password
- Select Student Records located at the top of the page
- Under Finances & Billing, select Bank Information-Refund Account
- Follow the instructions to set up direct deposit
