University of Iowa
There are so many great things about Iowa; I haven't decided to leave the state yet! I grew up as the youngest of three children right on the Mississippi River in Davenport, Iowa. While there, I attended Davenport Central High School (Go Blue Devils!) where I was active in cross country, track, and anything music (band, choir, orchestra, show choir). I then decided to check out the neighboring state of Illinois and traveled across the river to attend Augustana College in Rock Island (Go Vikings!). While at Augustana, I played the violin in the Augustana Symphony Orchestra and was active in the Alpha Phi Omega Co-ed Service Fraternity. I completed my BA in Pre-medicine and Biology with a minor in biochemistry in 2007 and was inducted as a member into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Alas, I couldn't commit to being in any other Big Ten state without being a Hawkeye and I achieved my dream of being the last family member to become a true Hawkeye when I attended the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine for medical school! While in medical school I served as vice president and president of the Family Medicine Interest Group, the president of the American Medical Women's Association, and as a leadership member of the Bean Learning Community. I was also able to remain active and true to my service background and participated in multiple different service activities.
I loved being a Hawkeye so much I decided I couldn't leave Iowa City for my post-graduate medical training! What's not to love? The people are nice (so much in fact, there are multiple comments made by out-of-towners), there are bountiful benefits of being in a college town with Big Ten Athletics, summer festivals, farmer's markets, fresh sweet corn, outdoor music, recreation, and easy access to many major cities within a few hours’ drive. Plus, the residency is filled with spectacular residents, faculty, strong training with an interest in teaching and resident wellness, and many opportunities to customize your elective experiences with all the specialized offerings of an academic setting. My current professional interests within family medicine include: pediatrics with somewhat of a focus on development and disabilities, women's health, sports medicine, and learning how to become a better teacher! Outside of medicine I enjoy Hawkeye football, running, reading, hiking, traveling, and looking for new adventures! It's great being a Hawkeye!
