Fred Gerr, MD, Program Director

Dr. Gerr has been actively engaged in resident training for over twenty years. Prior to joining the faculty of the University of Iowa in 2002, he was director of the Occupational Medicine Residency Training Program at Emory University, in Atlanta, Georgia. A talented educator, he was awarded the Student Government "Professor of the Year" award for his teaching at Emory. At the University of Iowa, Dr. Gerr continues to provide individualized attention to all trainees in both the academic and clinical settings. Residents interact with Dr. Gerr while taking courses in occupational medicine and while providing patient care in the UIHC occupational medicine clinic. In addition to extensive experience in clinical occupational medicine practice, Dr. Gerr also conducts research on occupational musculoskeletal disorders and occupational neurological illness. He is board certified in preventive medicine (occupational medicine) and internal medicine and has practiced in Iowa, Georgia, New York and Massachusetts.

Brenda S. Buikema, MD, MPH

Dr. Buikema is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Occupational Medicine. She joined the faculty in February 2012. She completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Occupational Medicine at the University of Iowa and is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Buikema provides clinical occupational medicine training opportunities for occupational medicine residents and medical students at UI HealthWorks. In addition, she leads didactic sessions on clinical occupational medicine topics with residents in the Occupational Medicine Residency Training Program at the University of Iowa.

Laurence Fuortes, MD

Dr. Fuortes has been training Occupational Medicine residents at the University of Iowa for twenty five years. He teaches the core course in toxicology for Occupational Medicine residents and public health graduate students and works with the residents in the Occupational Medicine Clinic, the University Employee Health Clinic and on MPH practicum experiences. Dr. Fuortes enjoys working with medical students and residents on community-based applied research activities. His research and service interests include epidemiology of occupational lung disease and occupational/environmental toxicology. Dr. Fuortes is board certified in preventive medicine (occupational medicine) and internal medicine and has practiced in Iowa, Minnesota and Kentucky.

Patrick Hartley, MD, MPH

Dr. Hartley is a Clinical Professor in Internal Medicine and in Occupational and Environmental Health at the University of Iowa Colleges of Medicine and Public Health respectively. Dr. Hartley has over 20 years of experience in pulmonary care and critical care medicine, and 15 years of experience in occupational medicine, safety, and health. He is board certified in preventive medicine (occupational medicine). Prior to coming to UI HealthWorks, Dr. Hartley served 15 years as Medical Director of the UIHC Workers Health Clinic. He continues to serve as Medical Director of the Firefighter and Police Officer Disability Evaluation Program and as Medical Director of the Occupational Medicine Clinic, both at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He is also a staff physician in pulmonary and critical care medicine at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Marlene Thompson, Program Coordinator

Mrs. Thompson joined the University of Iowa Department of Occupational and Environmental Health in 2002. She has served as Program Coordinator for the Occupational Medicine Residency Training Program since 2007.
