Why Choose Iowa?

First and Foremost

We Have an Outstanding Faculty of Teachers, Healers, and Researchers

Our faculty is among the nation's best trained and most successful, as reflected in its authorship of basic and clinical research in leading journals, receipt of research funds and training grants, election to leadership positions, and receipt of national and international recognition for achievements.

Combined training at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is stable and thriving due in part to the strong support provided by both the Department of Family Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry. We invest in combined trained staff with three faculty board certified in family medicine and psychiatry and four faculty board certified in internal medicine and psychiatry. The director the of the program is board certified in family medicine and psychiatry and was the first graduate of the program.

We seek to provide residents with a variety of educational experiences so that they may choose among the many available career options. Residents complete our training program with a confidence in their knowledge and abilities, an awareness of where the field is now and where it is going, and the tools to participate in its exciting future.

And Just as Important

We Are a First-rate Hospital

University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics and University of Iowa Children's Hospital are designated by U.S. News & World Report as one of "America's Best Hospitals" and "Best Children's Hospitals," respectively.

We serve a large Midwest region for both primary care and specialized care. And we are the state's highest level of referral for several specialties. This comprehensive nature assures that during your residency you will be exposed to a broad mix of patients and conditions.

Moreover, our clinic that combines primary care and outpatient psychiatry, our medicine-psychiatry inpatient unit, and our inpatient eating disorder unit provides unique clinical experiences that are not widely available.

We Attract Outstanding Residents

Family Medicine-Psychiatry residents at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are similar in many characteristics to their national peers in educational background, gender distribution, career choices, and subsequent training experiences after residency training. However, our residents distinguish themselves by their high sense of responsibility and dedication to their patients, their superb efforts as teachers of medical students and others, and by their selection for national recognition and awards.

Our Programs Are Tailored to Your Interest

Your rotations as a resident will ground you in the fundamentals of primary care and psychiatry. Our program also offers many unique clinical experiences so that most areas of interest are experienced during your time here. Furthermore, you'll have the opportunity to explore elective rotations to help you focus on the type of medicine you wish to pursue following your residency.

Salary, Benefits, Schedules

Our first-year residents earn an annual salary of $50,200, which is above the 50th percentile nationally. Couple that fact with the relatively modest cost of living in the Iowa City area, and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics compares very well to programs in large urban settings. We are one of the few programs nationally to offer complete medical coverage for residents and their spouses and dependents at no charge. Our work schedules include extended maternity leave benefits and meet national standards for time on duty and time off between shifts.

Our Residency Programs Are Accredited and Well-Established

We meet and exceed the standards set by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the American Board of Family Medicine, and the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. The rigorous training and opportunities afforded by our program translate into outstanding academic opportunities and private practice positions.

Couples Match

We encourage couples match applications and will make every attempt to streamline interview dates and times for both applications. More information on couples matching can be found on the National Resident Matching Program website.

Support Is Always Available

Each resident receives support from faculty, from other residents, and from the administrative team. A door is always open to help you achieve your full potential and reach your career goals.

We Sweat the Details

Your work as a resident will be demanding enough. With that in mind, we have developed a suite of services to handle the details of employment, licensure, immigration, housing, even assistance for job placement of spouses and significant others. The dedicated professionals in our Graduate Medical Education office see to it that your time and effort are concentrated where they need to be--on your patients and on your career development.

Quality of Life

Happy UI residents

Iowa City and surrounding communities get consistently high ratings from national indexes of great places to live. Affordable housing, outstanding schools, moderate cost of living, superb shopping and entertainment, excellent transportation, and a mix of diverse cultures all make it a great choice, especially when you consider that much of it is available within easy walking or biking distance from our world-class hospital.

Being located on a Big Ten University campus creates a big plus for our residents. The University is a lively place for cultural and recreational activities. It is a hub for high-level sports and offers the excellent libraries, museums, and cultural centers you'd expect from a Big Ten school. Iowa has the smallest enrollment among the public Big Ten schools, which translates into a campus that's easy to navigate and a surrounding community that supports everything we do for our students and trainees.
