Erik Vanderlip was elected as the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Member-in-Training Trustee-Elect. The Association is governed by the Board of Trustees. The Bylaws of the Association vest the Board of Trustees with the authority to make policy, manage the affairs of the Association and to formulate and implement the policies of the Association. The Board is comprised of national and regional officers and trustees elected by the membership.

APA/Lilly Resident Research Award
Obi Onwuameze is the recipient for the APA/Lilly Resident Research Award. This award, supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Eli Lilly and Company provides an honorarium of $1,500 to five psychiatry residents who submit the best, original, unpublished scientific paper. In addition, a $1,000 award is given to the residency program in which the resident was in training at the time the work was completed. The award will be presented at the Convocation of Fellows program during the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting on Monday evening, May 7, 2012 in Philadelphia, PA.

Obi Onwuameze was selected as a 2012 NCDEU New Investigator Award recipient. The New Investigators' Workshop will feature special sessions around the theme of Identifying Common Targets across Brain Diseases – Implications for Treatment Development and Delivery. The 52nd Annual NCDEU meeting sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology, was held May 29-June 1, 2012 in Phoenix, AZ.

The five-day workshop at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA was April 14-18, 2012. In addition, the next two years will be spent in structured long-distance online mentoring, assessment of career goal progress, attendance at bi-monthly webinars, and completing on-line tutorials.

Obi Onwuameze was selected to receive the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology (ASCP) Clinical Trials Workshop Fellowship travel award. Erik Vanderlip was awarded one of ten national APA Public Psychiatry Fellowships (the first Iowa resident to receive this fellowship in 30 years of fellowship existence). The fellowship also appointed Dr. Vanderlip as a voting member of the APA council for Medical Education in addition to a position on the board of the American Association of Community Psychiatrists. The annual APA meeting was held May 14-18, 2011 in Honolulu, HI.

Dustin DeYoung, Ben Shepherd, and Julie Voelker were accepted to present at the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine annual spring meeting April 27-May 1, 2011 in New Orleans, LA. Dr. DeYoung presented 'Assessing residents' experiences and comfort level with substance use disorders'; Dr. Shepherd presented 'Training received by primary care residents in caring for LGBTQ'; and Dr. Voelker presented 'Building confidence when providing medical care for the seriously mentally ill.'
