The department occupies approximately 100,000 sq. ft. of space in the Medical Laboratory Building, Medical Research Center and University Hospital, and approximately 30,000 sq. ft. of space in the adjacent Veteran's Administration Hospital.

Most of the diagnostic laboratories occupy approximately 40,000 sq. ft. of laboratories on the fifth and sixth floors of University Hospital in close proximity to the operating rooms and wards, including a modern, spacious laboratory adjacent to the surgical operating rooms to enhance frozen section and surgical pathology consultative functions, and new state-of-the-art laboratories for diagnostic microbiology and for molecular pathology. The department is well-equipped with numerous multi-headed teaching microscopes, modern projection and audio-visual equipment, and computer based teaching facilities.

The department currently occupies approximately 26,000 sq. ft. of research-dedicated space in the Medical Laboratory Building and Medical Research Center. This space consists of modern laboratories and core facilities that support cutting edge cellular, molecular and genetic research investigating a range of diseases. Faculty in Pathology currently have research programs in immunology, inflammation and vascular biology, microbiology, neuroscience, signaling and cell death, stem cells, tumor biology and cancer, and virology. In addition to faculty-directed laboratories, the Department provides core laboratories to support the efforts of its investigators. These include flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, quantitative real time PCR, histology and veterinary pathology cores. The College and University also maintain a large number of high-level research core facilities.
