Sixth Year: PGY-6, Chief

(4 months UIHC, 4 months VAMC, 4 months Cedar Rapids)

The goal in the final year, as a chief resident, is to learn the management of a urology clinic and surgical schedule. To learn management of personnel. To observe and learn from a different private practice group and hospital setting. To master major open surgical procedures and techniques. To complete Urology residency as competent urologists, prepared well for the Urology Board Examination, and prepared to enter an academic or private Urological career. As the chief resident they perform most of the major open surgical cases with faculty assistance in the operating room. They also may perform select major endoscopic, laparoscopic or robotic cases. They supervise the teams that are responsible for inpatient care, and round on all inpatients each morning, with sit-down rounds each evening. They advise and supervise in all decisions regarding inpatients, with consultation and active participation by the faculty. This rotation is split between three services: UIHC, VA and Physicians' Clinic of Iowa in Cedar Rapids, IA.
