Commitment to Excellence in Emergency Care

As a trauma and critical care referral center, the Emergency Treatment Center (ETC) provides care for some of Iowa’s most critically ill children and adults. It is the only hospital in eastern Iowa certified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level 1 Trauma Center with pediatric commitment—the highest designation possible.

The ETC is a multidisciplinary facility that works closely with the medical and surgical departments at UI Hospitals and Clinics and UI Children’s Hospital to offer the best and most appropriate care. While providing expert emergency care for more than 40,000 patient visits each year, the staff also focuses on ensuring a personal and private experience for patients.

The ETC also:

• Is the only emergency room in eastern Iowa to staff board-certified pediatric specialists
• Is home to the UI Chest Pain Center for prompt evaluation, treatment, and counseling for patients with chest pain
• Is a clinical training site for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program and the Physician Assistant Residency Program
• Serves as a host facility and medical control base for the Johnson County Ambulance Service
