Study to Investigate Effects of Acute Dietary Nitrate Supplementation on Blood Flow During Exercise

Research Study to Investigate the Effects of Acute Dietary Nitrate Supplementation on Skeletal Muscle Blood Flow during Hypoxic Exercise.

Non-smoking, men and women without a history of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes between the ages of 18-35 and 60-85 years are invited to participate in a research study that will investigate the effects of dietary nitrates (via beetroot juice) on muscle blood flow during exercise in young (18-35 years) and older (60-85 years) adults. Participation will involve hand gripping exercise, blood draws, drinking a nitrate rich beverage (beetroot juice), breathing hypoxic gas (low oxygen) and the measurement of blood flow in the artery of the upper arm.

Participation involves two separate visits to our laboratory (the first visit will take approximately 15-30 minutes and the second visit will take approximately 5 hours) located on the Health Sciences Campus (Medical Education Building) at the University of Iowa.

Participants will be compensated.
