Bipolar Disorder I - Lithium or Valproate Treatment
Researchers are currently inviting volunteers with bipolar I disorder aged 18 and older to participate in a multi-center study evaluating lithium in the treatment of bipolar I disorder.  
The purpose of this research study is to stabilize subjects with bipolar disorder on lithium alone, or on valproate alone if lithium is unsuccessful, in order to investigate which genes are associated with a good response to medication.
The study involves a screening visit, followed by up to twenty-two visits (phone and or in-person) spanning 2 1/2 years.
Study participants will receive a diagnostic evaluation, treatment by an expert in bipolar disorder and careful monitoring of symptoms and side effects.

Compensation is provided.

This study is being conducted by the University of Iowa Department of Psychiatry.
