While most cancer is sporadic in nature, approximately one in ten cases are hereditary. Hereditary cancers are due to genetic changes that put an individual and their family at a higher risk to develop specific types of cancer.
The UI Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center offers cancer genetic counseling services with a genetic counselor who is certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
Our counselor will review your personal medical history and that of your family to determine if a history of cancer may be due to a genetic risk. In some cases, genetic testing may be appropriate for you and members of your family. Through genetic counseling, we can assist individuals and families at increased risk of cancer by providing recommendations for cancer screening and surveillance.
If you are concerned that you may have a genetic predisposition to a cancer or have been told by your health care provider that you should consider testing, please contact the Genetic Counseling Service at the UI Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
