Complementary and Alternative Medicine Clinic

Integrated complementary and alternative medicine services can be found throughout UI Hospitals and Clinics. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is an umbrella name for a diverse group of medical practices and products currently not considered part of conventional medicine.

Some health care providers provide both conventional medicine and complementary and alternative medicine and it is sometimes referred to as integrative medicine.

Be sure to tell all your health care providers of any complementary or alternative medications or supplements you take to avoid any interactions between prescribed medications and herbal preparations.

There are five types of CAM:

  1. Whole medicine services include homeopathic and naturopathic medicine
  2. Mind-body medicine includes cognitive-behavior therapy, meditation and art
  3. Biologically based practices include herbs, dietary supplements, foods and vitamins
  4. Manipulative and body-based practices include chiropractic or massage
  5. Energy medicine involves the use of biofield therapies like Reiki or bioelectromaganetic based therapies using electromagnetic fields

Therapies include herbal medicine, acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, massage therapy, healing touch, music therapy, mindfulness-based programs and biofeedback.
