Kidney Transplant: Outcomes
In choosing to have your transplant at the University of Iowa, you have come to a program that consistently ranks among the best programs in the country in terms of patient outcomes.
Our outcomes regularly exceed national averages based on the severity of the patients that we transplant. And, we tend to transplant patients faster than many other areas of the country. These shorter wait times mean greater opportunity for our patients to receive their transplant, get off dialysis, and resume a more normal life. We encourage you to research the outcome data provided by the Scientific Registry for Transplant Recipients.
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics kidney transplant program is ranked in the top 10 of all kidney transplant programs in the country for having some of the best graft survival rates [according to the 2012 SRTR report based on lowest graft mortality index (observed / expected rates) at three years].
By the Numbers
Over the past several years, our adult one-year patient survival rate has been 96.3 percent, which is higher than the national average. Our pediatric kidney one-year patient survival rate is 100 percent.
In a typical year we perform between 80 and 100 adult and pediatric kidney transplants.
In 2011, the most recent year that figures were available, a national model for organ transplant rates predicted that UI Hospitals and Clinics should perform an estimated 17.9 kidney transplants per 100 person years (a total of time that all patients are waiting on a transplant recipient list). During that year, we instead had a kidney transplant rate of 32.1 per 100 person years, outperforming this projection by almost 2 to 1 and the national average of 17.4 by that same 2 to 1 margin.
