More than 200 all-terrain vehicle accidents occur in Iowa in an average year, and the UI Children's Hospital and Kohl's Stores are working to prevent ATV accidents involving children.

Through a generous grant of $167,000 from Kohl’s, UI Children's Hospital will present Kohl's Keeping Kids Safe programs at eastern Iowa schools. Program dates are:

  • February 2 – Western Dubuque – Drexler Middle School

  • February 23 – Grundy Center Community School Middle School
  • March 14 – Iowa Valley Community School Middle School
  • April 6 – Ft. Madison Community School High School
  • April 11 – Wapsie Valley – Community School Middle School

The events will include a safety video, a tilt table demonstrating how easily an ATV will roll, samples of ATV helmets, and the “10 Commandments” of ATV safety:

  • Always wear your helmet
  • One person at a time
  • Ride the correct sized ATV
  • Always wear your protective gear
  • Never ride on the road
  • Take an ATV safety course
  • Tell someone where you are going
  • Respect private property
