Safety Tips for ATV Riders

More than 200 all-terrain vehicle accidents occur in Iowa in an average year, and the UI Children's Hospital and Kohl's Stores are working to prevent ATV accidents involving children.
Through a generous grant of $167,000 from Kohl’s, UI Children's Hospital will present Kohl's Keeping Kids Safe programs at eastern Iowa schools. Program dates are:
- February 2 – Western Dubuque – Drexler Middle School
- February 9 – Western Dubuque – Drexler Middle School
- February 23 – Grundy Center Community School Middle School
- March 14 – Iowa Valley Community School Middle School
- April 6 – Ft. Madison Community School High School
- April 11 – Wapsie Valley – Community School Middle School
The events will include a safety video, a tilt table demonstrating how easily an ATV will roll, samples of ATV helmets, and the “10 Commandments” of ATV safety:
- Always wear your helmet
- One person at a time
- Ride the correct sized ATV
- Always wear your protective gear
- Never ride on the road
- Take an ATV safety course
- Tell someone where you are going
- Respect private property
- Never use alcohol or drugs
- Always obey the rules
