Morbidity and Mortality
Morbidity and Morality is designed to examine, via case presentations, the successes and failures in our patient care model, with the intent to decrease medical errors, morbidity, mortality, and/or patient dissatisfaction. Presenters and audience members alike benefit from the information and discussion shared in these sessions.
Case Conferences
Second year and third year residents present annually a clinical patient encounter in which they learned something of particular interest or reviewed recent evidence based care guidelines. They may also present a situation where an improved process could have resulted in improved patient care.
Professor Rounds
The head of our Department, Paul James, MD, meets with our residents quarterly to discuss the art of medicine.
Geriatric Case Conferences and Journal Club
Every Thursday a resident will present a geriatric patient and prepare a case presentation of a topic of interest.
Journal Club
We are currently restricting our journal club which will meet monthly during the evening and will be led by one of our faculty members.
Management of Health Systems Retreat
All residents meet annually for a practice management retreat focusing on leadership, clinic management, and finances. Faculty cover our inpatient services and residents also have time for fellowship during this 36-hour retreat. The curriculum provides a broad economic, legal, human, and conceptual foundation so as to prepare residency graduates to ask sound business questions, interpret financial data, and promote and develop a productive work environment in the practice setting.
Annual Clinical Scholars Day
Second year residents present their quality improvement projects to our department at an evening event in May.
Refresher Course for the Family Physician
The 40th Annual Refresher Couse for the Family Physician will be held April 2-5, 2013. The purpose of this course is to provide practicing family physicians with a comprehensive overview of clinical issues relevant to contemporary family medicine. Lectures, case presentations, opportunities for questions and answers, a printed course syllabus — all combine to create a fast-moving and useful educational experience. The course should prove especially useful for those preparing themselves for examination by the American Board of Family Practice. The course is sponsored by the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Iowa. View a brochure for the 40th Annual Refresher Course for the Family Physician.
Chief Rounds
An interactive learning opportunity for first year residents and fourth year medical students reviewing common hospital diagnoses facilitated by our chief residents.
