      Fourth Year Resident

I am from Canton, MI and attended medical school at Ohio State University. The Department of Surgery here has impressive diversity amongst attending staff and residents, large case numbers and range of complexity of cases. Each sub-specialty is well-represented and the educational curriculum is organized and effective. My favorite thing about our program is the excellent mentorship available - from the standpoints of academics, research, career, and personal.

      Critical Care Fellow

I am from Fullerton, CA and attended UCSF for medical school. I chose UIHC because of the camaraderie amongst the residents and the flexibility of pursuing research, critical care fellowship, or going straight through with residency. My favorite thing about the program is how receptive the department is to resident feedback. To me this shows that the department cares for its residents and is determined to maintain a healthy morale.

      Research Resident

I attended med school at the U of Minnesota. I chose Iowa for residency because, well, it was the perfect fit. I was attracted by the academic focus, the diversity of patient cases, and the comradery. Our nurses are fantastic, as are my fellow residents and staff. Iowa City is a great place to be a resident - a short commute, lots of good restaurants, and the excitement and sense of community being a Hawkeye fan.

      Fifth Year Resident

I am from Greensboro, North Carolina and attended the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill for medical school. I chose to come to the University of Iowa because of the wide case variability and the flexibility with the program. My favorite thing about the program is the staff and the case load. Iowa City itself is very easy to live in: no traffic or crime, great schools, college sports, and great cost of living.

      Fifth Year Resident, Chief Admin

After working as a biochemist in San Diego for several years, I returned to school and attended the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. I ranked the University of Iowa for many reasons. The first and most important reason was that the residents were genuinely happy; worked hard but loved it. They were supported by a well-established department, full of academicians dedicated to teaching. I would recommend this program without hesitation.

      First Year Resident

I grew up in Phoenix, AZ and went to medical school at the University of Arizona in Tucson. What I like most about this program is that the faculty are very approachable and my colleagues are not only co-residents but also friends. Iowa City has been a great experience so far between tailgating for and watching Hawkeye football games, eating at mom and pop restaurants, and witnessing the seasons change (something that is unusual for my hometown).
