• Welcome

PAFellowshipThank you for your interest in the Physician Assistant in Psychiatry Fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa.

The United States is in the midst of a crisis in terms of a shortage of mental health care providers because, while the need for psychiatrists and other providers of psychiatric services has grown markedly over the last two decades, the supply of these trained professionals has stayed relatively flat. Iowa is an extreme example of this crisis as it ranks among the bottom three states in psychiatrists per capita.

Because no single strategy is likely to solve this problem, a multi-pronged approach is clearly needed. One piece of the solution is to optimize the quantity and quality of psychiatric extenders, like physician assistants, who can provide psychiatric services in collaboration with psychiatrists.

Our one-year program exposes physician assistants who are interested in specializing in psychiatry to a broad array of disorders in a variety of settings, both inpatient and outpatient. As this program is directly funded by the state, priority is given to applicants who express an interest in practicing in Iowa.
