Welcome to the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. We appreciate your interest in our Internal Medicine Residency program.
Our three-year accredited program prepares our residents to address the wide range of clinical problems faced by the practicing internist.
In addition to ensuring that you develop a strong foundation in general internal medicine, our program supports your professional development by offering distinct training pathways that allow you to tailor the residency experience to meet your individual career goals.
Whether you want to sub-specialize, serve patients in primary care, practice as a hospitalist or shine as a clinician researcher, our program will prepare you to reach those milestones.
"UIHC Internal Medicine residency provides great balance between resident autonomy, supervision, and learning opportunities. Staff physicians are very easy to approach and eager to teach. Also, the program has diverse research opportunities from basic science to clinical research that are available to residents."
"I chose to continue my training at the University of Iowa because I find it to be the perfect blend of strength and intensity with the warmth and kindness of the classic Midwest. As residents, we are constantly learning and are always encouraged to strive for excellence in all we do. At the heart of all this training, I am a member of a passionate team of caring providers."
"Internal medicine at UIHC is a well-rounded program that provides us with excellent training, diverse pathology and a learning environment dedicated to our success in a collegial atmosphere. Our faculty respects each resident as a colleague, rather than only looking at them as a trainee."
"At the University of Iowa, everyone knew my name on day one of residency. This program provides phenomenal educational opportunities while also providing an extremely friendly and personal environment in which to learn and collaborate with colleagues."
"Pursuing internal medicine training at the University of Iowa was an easy decision. I am impressed by the dedication of the faculty to teaching and the importance placed on patient care. I feel that the balance between autonomy and guidance will allow me to reach my goal of being an exceptional internist."
"I am very impressed with the clinical training as well as support from my colleagues and staff at the University of Iowa. At the end of my residency, I feel confident I will have the tools to succeed as an internist."
