The fellow will attain technical skill in the surgical procedures associated with the treatment of gynecologic malignancies. As the fellow gains more technical skill and surgical judgment, more responsibility in the operating room is given. The fellow will gain surgical experience related to comprehensive pelvic surgery, radical vulvar excisions and reconstruction, radical tumor debulking and bowel surgery, upper abdominal procedures, exenterative procedures, and urinary and fecal diversion. Emphasis is also placed on minimally invasive procedures using both traditional laparoscopy and the da Vinci robotic surgical system.
Over 500 new patients were seen on the Gynecologic Oncology Service between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012. Operative procedures performed by the fellows included radical hysterectomies, radical or simple vulvectomies, inguinal lymphadenectomies, pelvic exenterations, abdominal hysterectomies, ovarian debulking procedures, colostomies and other bowel procedures, urinary diversions, brachytherapy implants, and other major operative procedures. More than 100 robotic hysterectomies (with or without lymphadenectomy) were performed.
