Clinical Rotations Basics

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Program is 3 years in duration. A precise training program has been mapped out to accomplish the clinical and research goals.

The first full year of the MFM Fellowship is Clinical MFM. It is divided between the Antepartum Service / Labor and Delivery (L&D) Rotation and the Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Unit Rotation (6 Months Each Rotation).

The Antepartum Service / Labor and Delivery Rotation includes the following:

  • Fellows High Risk Continuity of Care Clinic
  • High Risk OB Clinic
  • Ultrasound Clinic Scans
  • Supervision of the Labor and Delivery Unit
  • Staff Ultrasound Scans
  • Antepartum Service – The fellow conducts daily morning rounds (Monday-Saturday). He/She takes all incoming calls from outside physicians as the “perinatologist on-call” for the MFM Division, Monday-Friday, and coordinates patient care from these calls.

The Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Rotation includes the following:

  • Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Unit Three Full Days Per Week
  • Cover Ultrasound Scans Three ½ Days Per Week

The second full year of the MFM Fellowship is dedicated to Research. During this year, the fellow takes Graduate Courses and focuses on their research interests. Two graduate courses are required and several others are offered. While on research, the fellow will have 10% clinical time with a ½ day clinic. This assignment is either the FDT Clinic or the Fellows Clinic on Tuesday mornings. The fellow may continue to take night call during this research year. If assigned, this night call can be placed on Friday or Saturday evenings to have minimal impact on research endeavors during the week.

The third year of the MFM Fellowship is divided between the following rotations:

  • 9 Electives: The fellows, along with the Program Director, choose 9 electives for the final year of fellowship.
  • 1 Month SICU/MICU: The fellow is assigned to either the UIHC SICU or MICU to participate in patient care for 1 month.
  • 2 Months of L&D Supervision: The fellow spends 2 months as the supervisor on the Labor and Delivery Unit at UIHC.
