Hornick Receives Iowa Thoracic Society Outstanding Clinician’s Award
The American Thoracic Society (ATS) and the Iowa Society Chapter sought a way to honor a member who demonstrated excellence in clinical care of patients. This Iowa Thoracic Society Outstanding Clinician’s Award was given to Dr Douglas Hornick in 2009.
Dr. Hornick is a well respected member of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Division at the University of Iowa for his care to patients and his teaching. He has been involved with the ATS from a local to a national level, but all of those who know him, including his patient’s, think of him first as an outstanding clinician and friend. His interactive nature and sense of humor make his lectures stand out from the rest. He truly enjoys teaching.
Supporting letters from Dr Hornick’s peers for the Outstanding Clinician’s Award include comments on his numerous achievements and inspiring nature. From his patients, comments reflected on his compassionate care and their complete trust in him. Perhaps the following anecdote from a patient with Cystic Fibrosis is the essence of why Dr Hornick received this award: “Dr. Hornick is the best doctor I’ve ever had. He knows we have lives outside of ‘being sick’. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience, a big heart filled with compassion and excellent bedside manner towards his patients and their families. Every day reminds me of how grateful I am to have Dr. Hornick as my doctor.
