About the Program
The primary goal of the surgical residency training program is to prepare each resident to be successful in the career path he/she chooses - whether academics, subspecialty, rural, or other private practice. The University of Iowa has a long standing Residency Program.
Graduates of this program are prepared to enter a fellowship or private practice or to continue in an academic career. Residency training is a top priority for the entire faculty of the Department of Surgery. Through close supervision, the surgical staff provides teaching at each level for the residents with a well-organized program of increasing responsibility from the first through the fifth years.
A further goal of the program is to create an environment that encourages residents in scholarly pursuits. There are many opportunities for residents to prepare manuscripts, write chapters and book reviews and to engage in original clinical, basic science, and translational research.
