Michael Flaum, MD, is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Iowa. For many years, Flaum directed the Iowa Consortium for Mental health, which serves as the academic liaison to the public mental health system in Iowa. As a part of that work, he was very involved with identifying potential solutions to the shortage of mental health care providers in Iowa. The Physician Assistant in Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of Iowa is one piece of a multi-pronged strategy to address that shortage.
Flaum's clinical interest focuses on adults with serious and persistent mental illness who are at highest risk for homelessness, incarceration, institutionalization, and/or frequent use of hospital or emergency services. As such, much of his current clinical work is done in emergency and outreach settings, including homeless shelters and residential care facilities. Fellows interested in getting exposure to these types of settings may arrange to do so in place of some of the more traditional inpatient and outpatient rotations.
