Clinical Rotations

3 fellows talking

The University of Iowa Children's Hospital is the only comprehensive health care center in Iowa offering the full range of Pediatric Critical Care therapies, including:

  • High-frequency ventilation
  • Continuous renal replacement therapy,
  • Extracorporeal life support (ECMO, LVAD)
  • Organ transplantation

Fellows' clinical assignments are all carried out at The University of Iowa Children's Hospital. We are the designated level 1 Pediatric Trauma Service; PICU fellows attend and participate in all Pediatric Trauma Activations in the EMT (Emergency Treatment Center). Our congenital heart surgery program includes over 150 operative cases per year and PICU fellows manage all of these patients. In addition to managing all the post-operative cardiac patients, fellows have elective weeks during their second and third year during which they may choose to rotate with the CV surgery service for exposure to surgical techniques, cardiac anesthesia, and the role of the perfusionist.
