Residents step into a special role during their fifth year as they become chief residents for the program. The year is split equally between family medicine and psychiatry rotations. Family medicine rotations include inpatient family medicine, outpatient family medicine, and sports medicine. Psychiatry rotations include child and adolescent psychiatry, a choice between assertive community treatment or electroconvulsive therapy, and consultation-liaison psychiatry. There is also time for electives in both specialties. Residents continue to devote time each week to the Family Medicine Clinic and Family Medicine Psychiatry.
Fifth year residents take senior call for family medicine, but do not take call for psychiatry.
