Training Program Eligibility Criteria for:
Application Information for U.S. Medical Graduates
Thank you for your interest in the residency training program in Pathology at The University of Iowa. If after reviewing the material on this web site, you are interested in applying, please apply through the on-line Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
A minimum of three letters of recommendation, including one from the Dean of your Medical School, should be submitted through ERAS. It is also very helpful to include a letter of recommendation from a pathologist with whom you have worked.
For both your benefit and ours, we require that candidates applying for residency positions in the department have a personal interview. After we receive your completed ERAS application, we will contact you concerning an interview date. Interviews are usually conducted from November through early January.
If you have questions about our program, please e-mail PathGMECoord@uiowa.edu.
We look forward to receiving your completed ERAS application.
Application Information for International Medical Graduates (IMGs)
Thank you for your interest in the training program in Pathology at The University of Iowa. If you decide to apply to our program, please follow the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) guidelines. Only ERAS applications will be accepted.
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics supports both H-1b and J-1 visas. The Department of Pathology does not offer externships or observerships to IMG’s.
UI Hospitals and Clinics requires IMGs to have passed their Step 2 by the time they begin their residency. Thus we as a department require passing of Step 2 including Clinical Skills before we will consider IMGs for an interview. Additionally, IMGs seeking an H-1b must have passed Step 3 before we will consider them for an interview.
We receive over 300 requests from IMGs per year! It is difficult to identify those highly qualified applicants among such a large number. Therefore if you are an IMG, we request that you study the following pre-application screening questionnaire below, which contains parameters similar to those we use to evaluate U.S. Medical Graduate applicants.
We encourage you to apply only if you score 4 or more points on this questionnaire.
An answer of "yes" to the first three questions is worth 2 points each.
An answer of "yes" to the remaining three is worth 1 point each.
1. Do you have letters of recommendation from a Pathologist with whom you have had accredited training (not just as an observer) in Anatomic (histopathology) or Clinical Pathology? This training in pathology must be beyond that required for graduation from your medical school, and the letter should attest to your aptitude in Anatomic (histopathology) and/or Clinical Pathology. (2 points)
2. Have you done an accredited one year Clinical Internship in the U.S. (not just as an observer)? (2 points)
3. Do you have a Ph.D. from a U.S. Medical School? (2 points)
4. Was your medical curriculum taught in English? (1 point)
5. Did you graduate in the upper 15% of your medical school class? (1 point)
6. Were your USMLE Step I & II scores both 82 or higher, and have you passed the CSA if applicable? (1 point)
If your score is 4 or more points, please apply to our program through ERAS. Please e-mail PathGMECoord@uiowa.edu if you have any questions.
A personal statement and curriculum vitae should be submitted with your ERAS application. A minimum of three letters of recommendation, as well as one from the Dean of your Medical School, should also be submitted through ERAS.
For both your benefit and ours, we require that candidates applying for residency positions in the department have a personal interview, and the number of interviews we can offer is limited. After we receive your completed application and letters of recommendation, we will contact you concerning an interview date. Interviews are usually conducted from November thru January. The ERAS application deadline is December 1st.
We look forward to receiving your completed ERAS application if you satisfy the criteria indicated in the questionnaire.
