The University of Iowa requires ECFMG certification for all physicians who graduated from an international medical school (IMG).
The ECFMG evaluates the qualifications of foreign medical graduate physicians and then provides certification before they enter U.S. graduate medical education (GME). To assess a physician’s ability to apply knowledge, concepts, and principles and to demonstrate fundamental patient-centered skills, the ECFMG utilizes scores from Step 1 and Step 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination. Medical licensing authorities in the U.S. require IMGs to be certified by the ECFMG in addition to other requirements, to obtain an unrestricted license to practice medicine.
USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 are required for all J-1 visas.
USMLE Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3 are required for all H1B visas and to acquire a permanent Iowa medical license.
