Education and Conferences
The Department of Urology provides a rich calendar of such learning opportunities designed not only to address the ACGME mandated competencies of Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning, Interpersonal Communication Skills, Professionalism, and Systems-Based Practice, but also prepare them for the radiology and pathology portions of Part I of the American Board of Urology Examination, heighten their understanding of and promote participation in research taking place at the institution, and familiarize them more intimately with the different urologic subspecialties as well as expose them to the local private practice urologists to better enable them to make decisions regarding their options for fellowship and/or academic practice after residency versus a private practice career.
Chief residents at UIHC and VAMC are responsible for presenting the coming week’s surgery cases at their respective sites. A brief summary of each case, with radiologic images, and cases are discussed. Conference is attended by all residents at UIHC and VAMC and by most faculty. Medical students assigned to urology rotation also attend.
Morbidity and Mortality Teleconference
Conference is attended by all residents on urology service at all sites. Resident and faculty at Mason City attend by teleconference, as does the resident at Cedar Rapids. Faculty at Cedar Rapids attend each third month. Senior resident at each site prepares a written summary of each morbidity and mortality at his/her site and distributes these at the conference. Each case is then presented for discussion and analysis. Literature regarding the topic is reviewed by the presenting resident.
Conference is run by the chief residents, who select 5-6 articles from the previous month’s Journal of Urology. Selected articles of interest from other journals may be reviewed. Two residents are also selected to present one major review article each. Other residents are asked during the conference to summarize other articles. One basic science article is reviewed each month with input from our research faculty. Questions are distributed to attendees prior to and at the end of the conference.
Presentations summarizing current knowledge of a variety of topics are assigned by the Program Director to midlevel residents and faculty. In-depth presentations cover topics that are not frequently discussed in thorough detail at other conferences. Residents present approximately four of these conferences during their residency.
Oncology/Minimally Invasive Surgery
This conference is attended by all residents and is intended to further expand on the concepts of urologic oncology and minimally invasive surgery. Topics vary widely from the basic science of prostate cancer to the surgical management of urologic malignancy, to the diagnosis and management of urolithiasis.
Specimens are presented and discussed by Dr. Laila Dahmoush, principal uropathologist at UIHC.
Pediatric Urology/Reconstructive Surgery
Case presentations and topic reviews by residents; current practices and advancements in pediatric surgical and clinical urology.
Drs. Kreder and Brown meet with residents to review residency issues, with topics being introduced by any in attendance. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss and resolve any problems regarding inpatient or outpatient management, consults, E.R., O.R., etc. Any other issues affecting residency, e.g. vacation problems, call schedules, rotations, time off for meetings, financial or manpower issues may also be introduced by residents or faculty.
Chief Resident Conference
Conference is attended only by residents. The Cedar Rapids chief resident presents a topic based on a chapter from Campbell-Walsh Urology, or an article from the AUA Update series.
Dr. David Kuehn, Professor of Radiology, presents a series of educational cases with radiologic images. Residents are challenged to interpret the images and suggest further studies if indicated. Attended by all residents.
Residents attend once per month and present interesting or problematic cases for group discussion regarding treatment decisions. Conference is also attended by medical oncology faculty and fellows, radiation therapists, and pathologists.
Rubin H. Flocks Visiting Professor
A distinguished urologist is invited as guest lecturer. Residents present current cases, research and/or clinical topics.
AUA Online Ethics Curriculum

Each resident is required to complete 1-2 modules every 3 months. Printed certificates of completion should be given to Isabelle Hardy.
Clinical Ethics for Urologists is an on-line curriculum that introduces and challenges physicians' proficiency in the ethical dimensions of their medical practice. Clinical Ethics for Urologists is designed for the novice in clinical ethics as well as for more experienced physicians. The curriculum is comprised of 17 modules that provide a means for driving achievement of the specific objectives for the core competencies in professionalism. The Ethics' curriculum is structured to develop a knowledge base of the "ethical principles" and of other matters important to the ethical practice of urology and other specialties of contemporary medicine. In addition to knowledge of clinical ethics, the curriculum is designed to foster in physicians an appreciation of the moral history of the profession and of the current state of debate about a range of ethical issues--from assisted suicide and euthanasia to medical futility.
