Why Choose Iowa?

Why Choose Iowa?

We Have an Outstanding Faculty of Teachers, Healers, and Researchers

The Department of Pediatrics faculty is among the nation's best trained and most successful, as reflected in our authorship of texts in the discipline and of reports of basic and clinical research in leading journals, receipt of research funds and training grants, election to leadership positions in pediatrics, and receipt of national and international recognition for achievements. All of these factors led to our ranking in the top 20 Departments of Pediatrics in the country, and a top 20 Children’s Hospital.

The educational philosophy that drives our residency training program is that we must prepare our trainees for a life-long career of self-education and dedication to the practice of pediatrics at the forefront of the specialty as it advances. We seek to provide each resident with a sufficiently broad experience that he or she can choose wisely among all the pediatric options to pursue a career in the general practice of pediatrics, a subspecialty service career, or an academic career.

We provide an education in the exploding molecular understanding of pediatric diseases, the critical evaluation of new information, and in the complex interactions of medicine with law, government, religion, and society, as well as instruction in the current diagnosis and treatment of disease. Residencies nationwide are adapting to the goal to evaluate resident performance in a mode that determines competence in a variety of areas. Our residents complete our training program with a confidence in their knowledge and abilities, an awareness of where pediatrics is now and where it is going, and the tools to participate fully in its exciting future.

We Are a First-rate Hospital

The University of Iowa Children's Hospital is a state-of-the-art pediatric facility integrated within the UI Hospitals and Clinics. A "hospital within a hospital," UI Children's Hospital benefits from the sophisticated services and comprehensive resources of UI Hospital and Clinics, one of "America's Best Hospitals" designated by U.S.News & World Report.

We serve a large Midwest region for both primary care and specialized care. We are the state's highest level of referral for several specialties. This comprehensive nature assures that during your residency you will be exposed to a broad mix of patients and conditions.

We Attract Outstanding Residents

Pediatric residents at UI Children's Hospital are similar in many characteristics to their national peers in educational background, gender distribution, career choices, and subsequent training experiences after residency training. However, our residents distinguish themselves by their high sense of responsibility and dedication to their patients, their superb efforts as teachers of medical students and others, and by their selection for national recognition and awards.

Our Programs Are Tailored to Your Interest

Your rotations as a resident will ground you in the fundamentals of your discipline. In addition, you'll have the opportunity, even in your first year, to explore elective rotations to help you begin focusing on the kind of medicine you'll wish to pursue following your residency.

Salary, Benefits, Schedules

Our first-year residents earn an annual salary of $52,200, which is above the 50th percentile nationally. Couple that fact with the relatively modest cost of living in the Iowa City area, and UI Hospitals and Clinics compares very well to programs in large urban settings. We are one of the few programs nationally to offer complete medical coverage for residents and their spouses and dependents at no charge. Our work schedules include extended maternity leave benefits and meet national standards for time on duty and time off between shifts.

Our Residency Programs Are Accredited and Well-Established

We meet and exceed the standards set by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and by the American Board of Pediatrics. The rigorous training and opportunities afforded by our programs translate into outstanding placement for our residents in fellowship programs, academic opportunities and private practice positions.

Couples Match

The Department of Pediatrics encourages couples match applications. We will work in conjunction with the corresponding department to attempt to streamline interview dates and times for both applicants. More information on couples matching can be found on the NRMP website.

Support Is Always Available

Each resident receives support from the education administrative team, through the mentor/mentee program, and from faculty in all general and subspecialty areas in pediatrics. A door is always open to help you achieve your full potential and career goals.

We Sweat the Details

Your work as a resident will be demanding enough. With that in mind, we have developed a suite of services to handle the details of employment, licensure, immigration, housing, even assistance for job placement of spouses and significant others. The dedicated professionals in our Graduate Medical Education office see to it that your time and effort are concentrated where they need to be--on your patients and on your career development.

Quality of Life

Happy UI residents

Iowa City and surrounding communities get consistently high ratings from national indexes of great places to live. Affordable housing, outstanding schools, moderate cost of living, superb shopping and entertainment, excellent transportation, and a mix of diverse cultures all make it a great choice, especially when you consider that much of it is available within easy walking or biking distance from our world-class hospital.

Being located on a Big Ten University campus creates a big plus for our residents. The University is a lively place for cultural and recreational activities. It is a hub for high-level sports and offers the excellent libraries, museums, and cultural centers you'd expect from a Big Ten school. Iowa has the smallest enrollment among the public Big Ten schools, which translates into a campus that's easy to navigate and a surrounding community that supports everything we do for our students and trainees.
