Didactic Curriculum
The core didactic program of the residency comprises three regularly-occurring conferences:
- Grand Rounds, featuring Department of Neurology, University of Iowa and visiting scholars describing the leading edge of neuroscience investigation and clinical care. Held weekly, Tuesdays at noon.
- The Neuroscience Course, a foundational series of lectures designed to build a base for further clinical learning. Semester-long sections of Neuroanatomy, Neurophysiology, Neuropharmacology and Neurochemistry are held in a two-year rotation. Held weekly, Fridays at noon.
- Journal Club, a resident-lead and faculty-supervised investigation of research methodology, biostatistics and the literature that guides our practice. Held every other Wednesday at noon.
Lectures are recorded and posted for later viewing on the web, and attendance is promoted through a “hold your pager” system.
Other rotation-specific and subspeciality conferences are held throughout the week, and resident attendance is encouraged. Stroke Rounds, held Monday to Friday at 8:00 AM, features discussion of an interesting or challenging recent case in a participatory format. Lively and open discussion of anatomic localization, imaging correlates, differential diagnosis and therapy are emphasized. A sample weekly schedule is noted below.
