Criteria for Candidacy
Training Program Eligibility Criteria for:
U.S. Allopathic Medical School Graduates
Application via the Electronic Residency Application Service (
ERAS
) including:
A minimum of three letters of recommendation
Letters from emergency medicine supervisors are preferable if possible
One letter must be a SLOR (Standard Letter of Recommendation);
Dean’s letter;
Medical school transcript verifying appropriate medical education to train in a large teaching hospital;
Personal statement (there are no specific requirements for the personal statement but in general it should explain why you are interested in an emergency medicine residency and justify why you would be a good candidate); and
photograph.
We do not require a “Chairman’s Letter.”
Registration with the National Resident Matching Program (
NRMP
) using #1203110 – Iowa Emergency Medicine Residency
Osteopathic Medical School Graduates
COMLEX scores, however we do prefer USMLE scores.
Application via the Electronic Residency Application Service (

International Medical School Graduates
CSA/
USMLE
Step 1 and Step 2 passed on first attempt. Scores must be available before you can be considered for an interview.
Medical school graduation within the last 10 years.
Hold a valid ECFMG certificate including CSA exam at the time of application.
Appropriate medical education to train in a large U.S. teaching hospital.
Evidence of one year of clinical training in an ACGME approved training program, previous emergency medicine residency experiences, or observership in the U.S. is strongly preferred.

Letters from emergency medicine supervisors are preferable if possible
