Thank you for your interest in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The Department of Otolaryngology is among the oldest in the United States (founded in 1922) and one of the most comprehensive in the world. It is situated in one of the largest university-owned teaching hospital in the country. U.S. News & World Report has ranked this department among the top otolaryngology programs in the United States for the past 15 years.
Our residency program follows a structured, progressive curriculum that focuses on consistency and continuity in patient care. Utilizing a team approach, residents are matched with faculty for specific rotations in each specialty area throughout the course of each year. This assures that residents will follow the same patients from their first clinical consultation through surgery and management. Our department offers five areas of clinical specialty:
University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics also offers a General Surgery internship year at our institution, which allows interns a two-month rotation through otolaryngology in addition to their other scheduled rotations. This is a departure from traditional internships, which deny significant contact with specialties during the internship year.
A rounded education is maintained through weekly didactic sessions including, temporal bone lab, tumor board, grand rounds, resident-run didactics using Otolaryngology COCHLIAS question bank and the cleft palate and craniofacial clinical conference. Residents will also benefit from several continuing education courses throughout their residency including head and neck course, sinus course and basic science course.
Our goals are to develop your training in terms of total patient care and provide you with the knowledge to confidently diagnose and treat diseases of the head and neck, to imbue a sense of critical thinking and excellent judgment, and to hone your skills as an investigator and a scholar into the growing body of medical literature.
