Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery

Minimally-invasive surgery offers an ideal option for the right patient. This program involves highly advanced expertise only available here at Iowa's comprehensive medical center.

Adult Cardiac Surgery

Coronary artery bypass graft surgery 

  • Heart and lung transplant 
  • Endovascular thoracic graphs for patients with aneurysms 
  • Epicardial lead placement for biventricular pacing
  • Ventricular assist device (VADs), including electric VAD and bridge to transplant
  • Maze procedure for atrial fibrillation
  • Mitral valve repair and replacement

Adult Thoracic Surgery (General Thoracic Surgery)

The general thoracic service provides state-of-the-art treatment for esophageal disease and surgery for pulmonary insufficiency, as well as lung cancer.

  • Adult extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Treatment for hyperhidrosis, including palm and axillary hyperhidrosis
  • Minimally invasive robotic procedures for pulmonary and esophageal disease
  • Minimally invasive surgery for both reflux and motor disorders
  • Photodynamic therapy
  • Special expertise and thoracic outlet syndrome 
  • State's largest center for esophageal disease both benign and malignant
  • Surgical treatment for patients with lung cancer, non-small cell and small cell

Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery

  • Pediatric cardiac disorders
  • Pediatric and congenital cardiothoracic surgery
