Occupational Therapy Clinic

Occupational therapy helps people to develop or regain skills important for independent living. Our therapists work with people of all ages who, because of illness, injury, development or psychological impairment, need to learn skills that will help them lead independent, productive and satisfying lives.

Occupational therapy can prevent injury or the worsening of existing conditions or disabilities and it promotes independent functioning in individuals who may otherwise require institutionalization or other long-term care.

Physical Disabilities

Our staff evaluates each patient's abilities and disabilities based on their physical and medical status. Using that information, they develop plans to help that person go home with the support, including rehabilitation and skilled or outpatient services, he or she needs to be successful.

They work with patients who have physical disabilities that include:

  • Burns  
  • Cardiac
  • Digestive diseases  
  • General medicine
  • Neurology
  • Neurosurgery  
  • Cancer  
  • Orthopaedics
  • Rheumatology

Patient assessments include:

  • Arm and hand, including range of motion, strength, feeling and function
  • Mental abilities, including awareness, orientation, following commands, memory, problem solving, communication, judgment, motor skills, visual perception and telling right from left
  • Activities of daily living, including feeding, personal hygiene, dressing and mobility

Mental Health Disabilities

Our staff evaluates the thinking and daily-living skills of each patient to determine the level of support and/or supervision that person will need after being discharged from the hospital.

Staff members use both individual and group therapy in outpatient, inpatient and community settings.

They help people of all ages to identify and learn practical solutions to daily life problems, including:

  • Development of coping strategies aimed at developing and improving coping and interpersonal skills, with the focus on everyday life situations
  • Management of anxiety and stress
  • Development of and maintaining healthy relationships
  • Management of daily living and work tasks (personal hygiene, money management, cooking, shopping)
