The prenatal genetics program at UI Hospitals and Clinics is a state-wide service. When genetic care is indicated, patients are referred to UI Hospitals and Clinics for:
- Genetic counseling for couples with a family history of a known genetic problem
- Second trimester amniocentesis for fetal chromosome evaluation and other genetic disorders
- Chorionic villi sampling
- Counseling for parents with an abnormal fetus regarding options, follow-up, and future childbearing
- Counseling about options for patients with an abnormal fetus
Services also include a state-wide maternal serum-screening program and include:
- Education
- Contacting local physicians with abnormal test results and making recommendations for patient follow-up
- Counseling services for patients with abnormal test results
- Full range of follow-up options to patients with abnormal fetuses
