Cervical cancer starts in the cervix, the lower, narrow end of the uterus or womb and occurs most often in women over 40. It is highly curable when found and treated early.
Experts at Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center understand cervical cancer and work as a team to design the best treatment plan. A typical team is made up of gynecologic oncologists, radiation oncologists, social workers, and nurses. Our Cancer Center is one of only two in the state where patients are treated by board-certified gynecological oncologists. Treatment plans may include:
- Immunotherapy (biological therapy) - works to boost, direct, or restore your body's natural defenses against disease
- Laser therapy - uses high-intensity light to destroy cancer cells
- Radiation therapy
- Cryosurgery: use of liquid nitrogen, or a probe that is very cold, to freeze and kill cancer cells
- Hysterectomy: removal of the uterus, including the cervix
