El cartílago normalmente protege la articulación permitiendo el movimiento suave y también amortigua el golpe cuando se hace presión sobre la articulación, como al caminar. La artritis involucra el rompimiento del cartílago. En ausencia de la cantidad normal de cartílago, los huesos de la articulación se rozan ocasionando dolor, hinchazón y rigidez..
