De no tratarse, una úlcera de presión puede dejar de ser una mancha irritada y pequeña en la piel para convertirse en una herida que puede amenazar la vida al producir infección y muerte de una gran extensión de tejido. El tratamiento de una úlcera de decúbito grave requiere hacer desbridamiento o excisión del tejido muerto y administrar antibióticos sistémicos
