El apéndice se encuentra ubicado cerca del punto de unión del intestino delgado y el colon y, en ocasiones, puede infectarse. Aunque muchas personas están familiarizadas con la apendicitis, ésta es una enfermedad relativamente rara que requiere de un tratamiento quirúrgico llamado apendicectomía para la extirpación del apéndice.
