Esta fotografía muestra los organismos llamados neumococos. Estas bacterias se presentan por lo general en pares (diplococos) o en cadenas. Los neumococos típicamente causan la neumonía, pero también pueden ocasionar infecciones en otros órganos como el cerebro (meningitis neumocócica) y en el torrente sanguíneo (septicemia neumocócica).
