Entre las funciones más importantes del intestino delgado está el absorber el agua restante de los residuos alimenticios que pasan por los intestinos. El residuo que queda permanece en un estado semisólido y es impulsado hacia el recto por peristalsis. Las heces son eliminadas del cuerpo a través de los reflejos causados por un colon lleno.
