Anticonceptivos a base de hormonas

La píldora funciona de diferentes maneras para prevenir el embarazo: suprime la ovulación de tal forma que los ovarios no liberan el óvulo y ocasiona cambios en el moco cervical, haciendo que éste sea más espeso y que por lo tanto sea más difícil para el espermatozoide nadar hacia el útero. La píldora tampoco permite que el revestimiento del útero se desarrolle lo suficiente como para albergar y nutrir el óvulo fertilizado.

Este método de control de la natalidad no proporciona protección contra las enfermedades de transmisión sexual.
