Makeover Challenge Guidelines

BetterU Challenge Woman

The American Heart Association sought applicants for its first annual Go Red BetterU Makeover Challenge in Johnson County sponsored by Integrated DNA Technologies. Applications were due July 18, 2012.

As part of the annual Johnson County Go Red For Women Luncheon, 10 women were selected to participate in the BetterU Makeover Challenge presented by CHAMPS (Cardiovascular Health, Assessment, Management and Prevention Service) at University of Iowa Heart and Vascular Center. Applicants were selected by a committee based on a variety of criteria. The selected participants were notified the week of July 30 and the Challenge officially kicked off on Monday, Aug. 13.

The participants will experience a 12-week heart health makeover in which each woman will receive an initial comprehensive heart risk assessment at University of Iowa Heart and Vascular Center, including a personal exercise prescription from a cardiac exercise specialist and a free 12 week membership package to the CHAMPS fitness facility.

Height and weight measurements; blood pressure, cholesterol, HDL/LDL, triglycerides, body mass index, and blood glucose tests; and a treadmill EKG will be measured, as part of heart risk assessment. Those same numbers will be measured at the end of the 12-week challenge and the results will be shared. Participants will be recognized Nov. 8 at the Go Red For Women Luncheon on at the Coralville Marriott HOtel and Conference Center.

"Too few people realize heart disease is the number one killer of women, claiming more lives than the next five causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer," says Fran Johnson, MD, of UI Heart and Vascular Center. "But the good news is heart disease can largely be prevented. It’s so hard, as a woman, to take the time we need to be healthy. This Challenge is all about giving our participants tips and tricks so they can add heart-healthy behavior into their everyday lives."
